The Z Fold 8 is a preview of what's to come... from Apple

Samsung on Wednesday held its latest Unpacked event in London, where the Korean tech giant announced three new foldable phones and a pair of new smartwatches.

The Flip 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra both look great, and Samsung is touting the Ultra as the best foldable phone it has ever made. And that's most likely true; we'll have to wait for reviews to go live in order to find out.

But the Z Fold 8, the shorter and wider phone in the middle of the photo at the top of this post, well that's the phone everyone is going to be talking about for the next few weeks, maybe longer. Why? Because it uses a similar aspect ratio and general design to that of the rumored foldable iPhone Apple is expected to announce in September.

There's even a 3D printable mockup you can print at home that's supposedly a replica of the unannounced iPhone. I printed one a few weeks ago – it felt awkward and too cheap to get a real feel for what it'd be like to use.

So, if you want a preview of what's to come from Apple, it's a good idea to read the reviews of the Z Fold 8 as they start to go live in the coming days and weeks. Don't worry about paying attention to the overall software experience, or even how battery life and cameras perform. Instead, focus on any discussions about the overall form factor and its usability.

I know that's what I'll be doing.

I've asked Samsung to send me a Z Fold 8 for some testing of my own. Hopefully it happens.
