Google just teased a new Fitbit — I’m so here for it
I’m growing tired of being nagged by a smartwatch.
NBA superstar Steph Curry posted a video on Instagram, briefly showing off a wristband that looks very similar to a Whoop fitness tracker. That is, a fitness tracker that lacks any sort of display. It tracks your health metrics in the background, while staying stylish. It’s a return to form for fitness trackers before smartwatches took over.
Here’s the video:
The video ends with a Google logo animation, and if you scroll through the comments you’ll find Fitbit and Google both left a teasing comment.
When I reached out to Google about the post, a spokesperson provided me with a similarly cryptic statement:
Our Performance Advisor has been working with the team to cook up something special 👀. More to share soon.
Shortly after Curry’s post went live a Bloomberg report provided more details about the unreleased product. According to the report, Google will release a Fitbit that lacks a screen later this year.
Google will, presumably, leverage its Fitbit Personal Health Coach and its AI integration to provide users with actionable insights and advice using data from the band.
Google I/O Kicks off next month, on May 19, and Google has been known to unveil hardware devices during the software-focused event. I’m not entirely sure that timing qualifies as “later this year” but it technically is later in the year.
